Shared Transport Pilot Opportunity

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Avego is now actively seeking partners with whom to launch Shared Transport pilots in the United States.

The pilots, which are eligible for funding under a new Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) scheme, are intended to demonstrate the potential for Avego Shared Transport to reduce traffic congestion and expand affordable commuting options in a busy urban environment.

On August 5th, the FHWA issued a solicitation for states and  local government partners to participate in its Value Pricing Pilot (VPP) program. Federal funding is available for innovative, non-tolling pricing programs, including dynamic ridesharing projects like Shared Transport. Formal applications are due on November 3. However, the FHWA is willing to provide feedback on draft proposals submitted by September 21.

Version 1.0.5 Released

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

We recently released version 1.0.5 of the Avego Shared Transport iPhone app.

Version 1.0.5 provides a number of improvements to the user interface. For example, both the “Map” and “Info” screens have been updated to make them more user-friendly.

Each stop along your route is now highlighted on the map view as you travel. You can zoom in and pan across the map quickly and easily. The “Info” screen also presents information more clearly about upcoming stops along your route.

Drivers can now start a journey from anywhere along their route and end a journey (dropping off all passengers) at any point by pressing the “End” button.

This latest update also ensures that the iPhone app runs smoothly with the new iPhone 3.0 OS software and provides a number of bug fixes and optimizations.

We are always working hard to improve our software based on the feedback we receive from users. We will be releasing a major update of the iPhone app in the next few months, so this is the last opportunity for users to provide feedback and suggestions for how we can improve the iPhone app before the release of version 2.0.

You can send us feedback directly via a new “Send Feedback” button in version 1.0.5, or just leave a comment below with your thoughts.

Avego Shared Transport is now an entry in the ITS Congestion Challenge, which aims to identify the best and most creative ideas for tackling traffic congestion. You can learn more about the competition and support Avego’s entry here.

Tips for Drivers

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

There are a number of things that you can do to ensure that you get the most out of AvegoTM Shared Transport as a driver:

  1. Use an in-car charger for your iPhone, otherwise your iPhone may run out of power mid-journey.
  2. Read our quick start guide for drivers to quickly learn how to record routes, suggest stops and pick-up simulated (“ghost”) riders.
  3. For safety reasons, and for improved GPS accuracy, ensure that your iPhone is securely mounted to a dashboard or windscreen-mounted holster.

Always ensure that your iPhone is safely mounted before driving.

Always ensure that your iPhone is safely mounted before driving.

  4. If you receive a phone call during a journey, you can resume the journey by just re-opening the iPhone app. However, it’s best to keep your conversations short.
  5. To accurately pinpoint your location, the iPhone requires a clear view of a good portion of the sky. If you experience any problems, particularly in built-up areas, check the strength of your GPS signal in the Meter screen or in the Options screen.
  6. If you do experience any unexpected behavior, you can help us to resolve the problem by submitting a diagnostics report in iTunes. When you sync your iPhone, you should be prompted to send the report. If not, you can reset this setting by right-clicking (or control + click) on your iPhone’s name in iTunes and then selecting “reset warnings”. The next time you connect your iPhone, you should be asked to submit the diagnostics report.
  7. Log-in to your online account to create new routes, or edit existing routes. New routes can only be created if at least 2 stops have already been created along the route. You can also use the web interface to manage which stops appear along your route as you drive.
  8. Make sure that the volume on your iPhone is not turned off, so that you can hear audio announcements about ride requests and other guiding information. There is a mute switch on the side of your iPhone.
  9. If you are not being offered any ghost riders on a journey, ensure that the “Simulated Riders” option is set to ON in your settings screen (Main Menu / Options / Settings). Here, you can also choose between miles / yards and kilometers / meters.
  10. Every route that you record must pass at least two stops. Your start and end points are not automatically created as stops, for your security, so you will need to create stops along the route unless somebody else already has. The more stop locations along your route, the more likely it is that you will receive requests for a ride.

Avego Shared Transport Version 1.0.3 Released

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

We have just released an update to the AvegoTM Shared Transport iPhone app. Version 1.0.3 includes a number of usability improvements for both drivers and riders.

The Avego Shared Transport iPhone app

The Avego Shared Transport iPhone app

Before you start using the iPhone app to share your vacant seats with others, you must first have recorded a route, with some safe and convenient pick-up / drop-off stop locations along the way.

With this latest update, drivers can make better decisions about the stops they create along the route, based on information about the proximity of the last stop passed and the total number of stops passed on the journey. When suggesting a stop, drivers are shown any existing nearby stops before they confirm the creation of a new stop.

While driving along a saved route, drivers are now provided with more guiding information, including the name of the next pick-up or drop-off location and a radar-like indicator pointing in the direction of the next rider to be picked up. Drivers can access more information about the riders they are matched with, and their bookings, by simply tapping on a rider’s name. It’s also possible to cancel the booking or to drop-off a passenger early.

This update also includes an improved user interface for riders, with the ability to view transportation alternatives if there is no service availability at the time a ride is sought.

All users should now upgrade to version 1.0.3. You can upgrade directly on your iPhone by selecting the “App Store” icon, then choosing the “Updates” tab and selecting the Avego update.

Of course, we are always working hard to improve our software, so please leave a comment or visit the forum if you have any suggestions for how we can make it better.

Ride-sharing Made Simple

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Many companies have offered ride-sharing sites on the Internet that help fill seats in people’s cars and conserve gas use and greenhouse gasses, however, Avego.com has the big advantage of being affiliated with iPhone.

This downloadable application lets motorists create a social network of vehicles and passengers who are traveling in the same direction.  In this way, its goal is to cut back on the safety concerns and anonymity of ride sharing.  Rather than riding in a car with a complete stranger, this program tries to put people together and acquaint them in a more reliable way.

In addition, the program’s goal is to have an established network so that Avego users determine points for pickup and drop-off.  Yet, while the idea is certainly intriguing, it will need to be demonstrated in the real world before it will be determined if it is more successful than any other ride-sharing networks online.

Just keep in mind, it always feels safer to be in a car with passengers, but you still need a good roadside assistance program in case of breakdowns.  After all, you don’t want to be stranded on the side of the road, no matter how many people are there to help.

Mapflow Avego wins role to provide pioneering mobile traveler information and guiding system to Madrid

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Mapflow Avego wins role to provide pioneering mobile traveler information and guiding system to Madrid

The OPTI-TRANS project will enable the first system to optimize real-time passenger information for buses,
metro trains and shared transport.

DUBLIN, Ireland (12 March 2009, Dublin) – Mapflow Avego has been selected to work with a consortium of
leading European R&D organizations to develop an innovative location-based mobile traveler information
and guiding system in Madrid, Spain. The OPTI-TRANS (Optimized Transport System for Mobile Location
Based Services) project, funded by the European Commission, will introduce for the first time a system that
enables commuters to plan a trip based on combining real-time passenger information for public transport
services with private carpools (“shared transport”).

“Madrid has one of the busiest public transport systems in the world, and now includes one of the largest bus
networks in Europe. Even so, we want to expand public transport even further, and this ʻshared transportʼ
concept could help by expanding the reach of our public transport system to places the buses don’t run,”
said Enrique Diego Bernardo, Head of Technology Projects for EMT, the transport operator for Madridʼs bus
service.

The system, which will be available via mobile phones, will serve as a personal transportation navigation tool
for Madridʼs commuters. Users will be presented with the optimum route for their trip, based on their current
location and the real-time availability of seats on buses, metro trains, and on the shared transport network of
private vehicles carrying GPS-enabled mobile phones.

“With global warming, geopolitical uncertainty of oil supplies, and ever-worsening congestion problems, we
are looking to provide ways to encourage people to get out of their single occupancy vehicles and extend the
public transport network to reach every street in every city,” said Mapflow Avego Managing Director Sean
O’Sullivan. “Madrid shares this vision of a society which is less enslaved by dependence on cars for all
personal travel, and we hope to help Madrid enable more efficient transport through better information
availability.”

Mapflow Avegoʼs contribution to the OPTI-TRANS project highlights the potential for the Shared Transport
concept, a version of which was released earlier this year as a free iPhone application. Avego Shared
Transport uses iPhone GPS technology and web services to dynamically match spare transport capacity in
private vehicles with transport demand from commuters. The integration of real-time passenger information
for shared transport with public transport will dramatically expand commuting options in Madrid by enabling
private cars to become part of the public transport network.

“The EU is looking to promote a sustainable transport environment through the use of innovative location
based applications”, said Boris Kennes, Galileo Applications Officer at the European GNSS Supervisory
Authority. “Everybody can benefit from advances in satellite technologies. The introduction of location-based
information and guiding services in Madrid will help commuters to plan their journeys in an efficient manner,
but it will also reduce traffic congestion and urban air pollution.”

Mapflow Avegoʼs shared transport expertise and capabilities will be strengthened through its collaboration on
this project with some of Europeʼs leading R&D organizations.

“The OPTI-TRANS project provides us with a unique opportunity to demonstrate the potential for a mobile
route navigation application in a truly multimodal urban environment. Madridʼs commuters will be able to
conveniently access real-time passenger information from public transportation services and private ʻshared
transportʼ services, at any time and from any location”, said Mr José Antonio Jimenez of Telefonica I&D.
The OPTI-TRANS project, which kicked off in January 2009, is hosted by EMT and Telefonica I&D, one of
the worldʼs leading telecommunications companies.

Avego, New Car Sharing Service (and iPhone App)

Monday, January 12th, 2009

I wonder if there is something that the iPhone can’t do. That small tech wonder is mind blowingly awesome, i simply doubt it.

Meet Avego, a new car sharing service and iPhone app all rolled into one. If you’re looking for a ride or have one to offer, look into Avego. A new service created by techies in Ireland to identify and connect carpooling individuals.

First reactions to Avego iPhone application

Monday, January 5th, 2009

Just before Christmas, Avego’s iPhone client began to ship.

And already, we’ve had people using the product in over 30 countries worldwide.  When you download the product, it has a feature which shows how many shared seats are available in your neck of the woods.  Hopefully this number is growing daily in the area around you.

We’re just getting back from the New Year holiday ourselves, but wanted to point out five things to know as you use the program:

1. “Learn More”

There is a “Learn More” button on the iPhone application which provides a bunch of assistance, FAQs on how to use the product, etc.  Here is the link (although the web pages are formatted to work better on your iPhone than on normal web browsers).

2. “Launch & Learn Mode”

Many people assume that Avego can’t possibly be launched all over the world at the same time… but it is!

How it is possible that Avego could be launched worldwide all at the same time, and yet still is able to guide prospective riders & drivers to within feet of their pick-up and drop-off locations?  That would be impossible, wouldn’t it?   The Trick answer: Web 2.0.  We’re counting on our users to add their favorite routes and the stop locations along their routes.  When more people do this, it makes the network work that much better.  The network is in “training mode” right now, and the more drivers that use it, the better it will work for ALL drivers and riders.

That is, if you are one of the first couple of hundred people to download the application in New York City, you may find some stops defined in your area… but more likely, over such a large area, you’re going to have to define some pick-up and drop-off locations that are convenient for *your* commute.  It’s like how wikipedia got started… a few thousand articles got people to use it, in English, and then, many years later, through the contribution of tens or hundreds of thousands of “editors” there are millions of articles in many different languages.

Now, we know that, in a few ways, the product is geared more for the US market (because the iPhone is so popular in the United States).  In fact, nearly 70% of the downloads of the Avego application have been in the US.  Right now, we are pricing the transport service only in US Dollars right now.  That is a temporary issue.  We hope to support multiple currencies in an upcoming release.  But, as a Rider, you can purchase Avego credits via your Euro or Yuan bank account as well, through paypal.  And, as a driver, you can move out the credits you earn into your local currency as well.

3. This is an experimental travel network

Hey, we’re not allowed to call the product a beta product because Apple doesn’t allow us to.  But the reality is that it’s not perfect, and we know it’s not perfect, and we’re working on improving it day by day.  Naturally, there are several features that aren’t in the shipping product right now that we know need to be (our “communities” implementation, for example, which allows people to share rides only to a group of others in their social or work network).  This and many other features are under development and should be available to you in the coming months.

There are also a number of things we’ve overlooked that we’ve quickly discovered as the users have blossomed into the thousands for our iPhone and web applications for Avego.  For example, the automotive database we’re using on the iPhone isn’t comprehensive enough. We will address these issues in an upcoming intermediate release.

But there are also several features that aren’t in the product that could be.  Write an e-mail to suggestions (at) avego.com  to let us know what you think should be in the product.

4. Drivers Welcome

The iPhone application is currently more geared to the Driver than to Riders… for several reasons.  We need to gather information about routes and pick-up points before rides can be offered.  Once there is a critical mass along a route, the application works great for Riders… but in most areas it may take months or even years to develop this critical mass.  So in particular, we’re looking for Drivers right now.

Don’t worry though, as a Rider, by submitting a transport request from one place to another, we record this in a data log and will automatically notify you when some services become available in your area.  And drivers that register their routes now, we know that riders aren’t available right now in most areas… but as they become available, we’ll let you know…

5. How Can I Help?

We’ve been hearing from a lot of people about how they like the idea and the capability of the iPhone product.  It’s great to hear from so many transport professionals who really dig it and want to help spread the idea in their area.  The truth is, we can use all the help we can get!  We’re starting a bit of a transport revolution by this radical idea of using all this wasted transport capacity on an ad-hoc basis.

Let us hear from you!  While advocacy of this concept can happen work group by work group or campus by campus, it can also be encouraged by pilot programs and by governmental grants. Write to support (at) avego.com if you are looking to file a project proposal to your local government or transport management association to support funding a “shared transport” pilot in your metropolitan area, or in a government agency or corporate campus.  We’d love to support (with white papers or sample proposals) funding applications to governments and third parties.  Obviously the primary beneficiary of any pilot is going to be the driver/rider.  Let us know what you think and how we can help!

Thanks to the thousands of people who have already shared their enthusiasm for this idea.  We’re looking forward to developing this concept rapidly throughout the coming year!

Best wishes to you and yours for a productive and happy 2009!

Sean O’Sullivan

Avego shipping Worldwide!

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

Top country, by far, is United States, with about 70% of the downloads.  But a fair number of downloads as well, in order by units shipped from Japan (nearly 10%), France, Italy, Portugal, Germany, and our home country of Ireland (3%).  A smaller amount from Russia, Great Britain, Taiwan, Brazil… And a smattering of orders from others, mostly from European and Asian countries…  Over 20 countries in the first day of “sales”!  SO cool!
