U.S. DOT announces first grants in Livability Initiative

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood recently announced the availability of $280 million for urban circulator projects such as streetcars, buses, and bus facilities to support communities, expand business opportunities and improve people’s quality of life while also creating jobs.

US Department of Transportation

The money represents the first batch of funding by the Obama Administration for its Livability Initiative, a joint venture of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

“This represents a significant effort to promote livable communities, improve the quality of life for more Americans and create more transportation choices that serve the needs of individual communities,” Secretary LaHood said. “Fostering the concept of livability in transportation projects will stimulate America’s neighborhoods to become safer, healthier and more vibrant.”

A maximum amount of $25 million per project will be made available from approximately $130 million in unallocated discretionary New Starts/Small Starts Program funds. Eligible projects include streetcars and other urban circulator systems. Priority will be given to projects that connect destinations and foster the redevelopment of communities into walkable, mixed-use, high-density environments.

Transit operators interested in acquiring FuturefleetTM to enable reliable real-time passenger information (RTPI) for their fleets can now apply for this funding.

Avego has compiled two documents with more information on funding opportunities for transit agencies in .pdf format, which are now available here and here.  Contact information is provided on each document if you have more questions or would like assistance in applying for these grants.

Avego opens third office in North America

Avego’s Futurefleet, which is built on top of the same transport management infrastructure that Avego’s Shared Transport consumer application runs on, is seeing an explosion of growth and acceptance in North America.

Avego’s original, and still unique, strength of allowing consumers to advertise and / or book seats in passing vehicles provides cities and transit agencies with something they have longed for in their bus and public transit networks: an inexpensive, responsive and rapidly deployable solution for real-time passenger information.

In the last month, 3 more North American cities, which will be announced soon, have signed on to roll out Futurefleet-equipped buses. The attraction of the Futurefleet system is not only the cost, which can be up to 10 times less expensive than legacy technologies, but also the increased speed, capabilities and convenience of the Avego web-hosted solution.

Avego’s focus on improved efficiency of passenger transportation networks has enabled it to double its staff in Ireland over the past 12 months, even during the difficult challenges of the current financial crisis, as it continues to expand its international presence.

The official opening was attended by Minister Kelleher; Chairman of Enterprise Ireland, Hugh Cooney; and Ireland’s Ambassador to China, Declan Kelleher.  Present from the city of Dalian were the Chinese Government’s Dalian High Technology Zone’s Vice Deputy Li Wei Ming, Bureau Director David Mao, Dalian Software Association Director Shun Pen, and Jeffrey Tan, General Manager of the Ascendas IT Park.

Speaking at the opening, Minister Kelleher said:

“Avego is a leading Irish exporting software company and one of the most prominent software companies in their field.  This announcement marks a significant step in their successful exporting strategy.  The establishment of this office in China will enable Avego to better access the potential in the Chinese market.  The company’s success in this market will help the further growth and development of their Irish base in Cork.”

The office, which includes a China Network Operations Center, is located in the Dalian High-Tech Zone.  Dalian, a city of 6.2 million people, is one of the most highly regarded places in China for the development of software, and also one of the fastest growing cities in China.  Avego is thought to be the first Irish technology company to establish in the city of Dalian, as well as the province of Liaoning, a region to the Northeast of Beijing with a population of 42 million people.

“We are thankful for the tremendous reception and co-operation we’ve received from the Chinese government in the establishment of our Asia-Pacific headquarters,” said Sean O’Sullivan, Managing Director of Avego Ltd.  “We look forward to working with transportation operators to face the unique challenges present in the massive and rapidly modernizing China.  Our staff in Ireland, China and the United States are combining efforts to produce products that will improve transportation networks worldwide.”

Futurefleet: In-Vehicle Services

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Futurefleet is our real-time management system for passenger transport operators, providing a comprehensive range of features for enhancing operations services, passenger services and in-vehicle services. This month we will look at Futurefleet’s in-vehicle services capabilities, which can be tailored to meet the needs of our customers.

The Futurefleet Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) is a GPS-enabled driver console with a touch-screen interface for greater durability and performance.

Throughout a journey, drivers are provided with a real-time view of their vehicle’s progression along a route. On-schedule performance is highlighted with anticipated arrival times, times-to-arrival and comparisons with scheduled arrival times. Drivers are also informed about the number of passengers disembarking at each upcoming stop.

If a driver is ahead of schedule they are provided with a red “stop” indicator to ensure schedule adherence, thereby reducing the potential for bus bunching and improving the predictability of services for passengers. Drivers can also select to enable audio announcements about a particular upcoming stop, or for all upcoming stops, automatically.

The Futurefleet MDT

Fleet operators may choose to enable Futurefleet’s advanced ticket sales management capabilities. The Futurefleet MDT uses a vehicle’s exact location to prompt drivers with appropriate ticket prices, as defined by operators using Futurefleet’s web interface, and a simple touch-screen interface for issuing tickets ensures faster passenger loading times.

Each transaction is recorded and made available to drivers via detailed ad hoc and end-of-journey revenue reports, increasing accountability and reducing cash leakage. Fleet operators can access detailed management reports online and are also provided with automated daily sales reports. A sample report can be downloaded from here.

These are just some of Futurefleet’s in-vehicle services capabilities. Learn more about Futurefleet’s full range of capabilities here.

Delivering Real-Time Passenger Information in Mysore, India

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Earlier this month, Avego implemented a real-time passenger information (RTPI) pilot of Futurefleet in Mysore, India.

The Futurefleet RTPI pilot program is designed to provide public transit authorities and passenger transportation operators with a fully operational RTPI system on one of their busiest routes, with automatic vehicle location (AVL) and advanced management reporting capabilities.

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), which operates more than 15,000 buses in India, invited Avego to demonstrate the benefits of RTPI on a test route between Mysore’s City Bus Stand and the world famous religious landmark – Chamundi Hills. KSRTC intends to initially introduce an RTPI system for 250 buses and 80 bus stops in Mysore, and then to expand the system to 8 other cities in India.

Avego’s 3-day set-up procedure ensured that KSRTC and their customers could quickly and easily experience the full benefits of a robust real-time passenger information system. Now, for the first time in India, passengers are provided with real-time departure and arrival times via bus terminal departure boards, as well as more regular bus service intervals due to Futurefleet’s schedule adherence notifications for drivers.

Our Right to Self Reliance – 22 February

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

….The next very cool and very recent development, at least in the States, is Avego , an ambitious and varied start-up that connects carpoolers via an Iphone app. GPS, GNS, GIS, iPhone and web technologies are used to dynamically match a driver’s spare seats on a journey with a passenger’s request for transport. Drivers receive a small fee from the passengers they transport, via an automated transaction, to help pay for the costs of the commute. Avego is also ramping up for Futurefleet TM which is designed to address, as you might guess from the name, various fleet applications….
