…It reminded me of another service I came across recently. It’s called Avego and is a cross between carpooling, public transport and eBay. The service matches a driver’s wasted seat capacity – those seats which are unoccupied – to passengers, reducing commute costs for all participants…there are, fortunately, safeguards for both the driver and the passenger, allowing the driver or the passenger to have confidence in those with whom they select to share their journey…

Avego…is demonstrating an iPhone application…drivers who want to offer rides will first download the app, then record their preferred route….The system stores the route, adding it to its menu of paths and pick-up points and offering them automatically to interested riders….Avego will charge 30 cents a mile…with 85 percent going to the driver to recover some of the commuting costs and 15 percent to the company. All payments will be handled by automated online accounting….
